Home masks and clinic panels deliver different doses.
Many LED studies used clinic panels at doses far above what home masks deliver per session. Dose (J/cm²) is irradiance (mW/cm²) multiplied by time, so a low-output mask needs more time or more sessions to approach a clinic dose, and more is not always better.
How dose is calculated
Dose in J/cm² equals irradiance in mW/cm² multiplied by seconds, divided by 1,000. A mask at 30 mW/cm² for 10 minutes delivers about 18 J/cm². At 10 mW/cm² for 10 minutes, it delivers about 6 J/cm². These numbers assume constant output measured at the skin, which brands rarely confirm.
Doses used in the studies
Reported study doses range widely. A 2005 clinic study used 126 J/cm² of red light per session. A 2006 acne study used 96 J/cm² of red and 48 J/cm² of blue. A 2023 eye-wrinkle trial used 3.8 J/cm², and a 2025 red mask trial used about 8 J/cm².

Why more is not always better
Light therapy has a biphasic dose response: small doses stimulate cells, while large doses can inhibit them. That is one reason researchers caution against simply adding power or time. Follow the device’s manual.
Estimated dose for each mask
Three of the five publish an irradiance figure. Multiplying it by the listed session time gives an estimated dose per session. These are calculations from manufacturer claims, not measurements.

Questions
How do I calculate LED mask dose?
Multiply irradiance in mW/cm² by session time in seconds and divide by 1,000 to get J/cm². This assumes constant output at the skin.
Do home masks match clinic studies?
Often not per session. Several studies used clinic panels at much higher doses, while recent mask trials used 4–8 J/cm² per session.
